The Australian banks strong push for going cashless has been met with a backlash and a push from cash advocates. While there are pros and cons to each argument, going cashless is a slowly rising trend, with several countries pushing. There are two major groups (and others of course) that may find themselves left out: the elderly generation and the under-banked. There aren't many options out there for the under-banked in Australia, but this could create a market for this segment. Another considerable sized group, is merchants. Some still heavily rely on cash as the main method to accept payments, mainly to transaction processing fees of card payments. These fees take a bite out of their profit, which some may select to pass on to the consumers, making them less competitive. The push for cashless started with Macquarie Bank, later followed by Bank West. Now the big 4 ( CBA, WPC, NAB, AMZ) are getting behind the move. https://lnkd.in/dFhb_jnd

I highly recommend this course with Daniel Prager . It’s official! The first OCR cut in 4 years. The RBNZ has made the bold move of moving the cash rate lower while inflation is stil outside the target band of 1-3%. Their commentary seems to suggest the economy is moving in the right direction, with business pricing intentions indicating stable low inflation in the short to mid term. Will this be the first of a series of rate cuts or will the reserve bank take a wait and watch approach at the next OCR review? Either way, the wholesale markets are abuzz with activity, optimisticly pricing in further cuts indicating we can reasonably expect to see more retail interest rate cuts from NZ banks in coming months. If you’re a first home buyer or looking for your next property purchase, time may be running out for you to take advantage of this goldilocks market. As interest rates drop, buyers that were previously priced out of the market may become active again, driving up demand. Australia Awaits for one of the most important GDP figures The Reserve Bank has modelled a 0.9% annual GDP figure for the June quarter. The RBA board may read a weaker result as making an interest rate cut this year more likely, while a stronger figure would likely push any reduction into next year.

It's actually happening!!! Macquarie Bank has set a date and they're going cashless! Watch this space! Macquarie has clearly stated, this is a well informed move, based on observations from customers data and interactions with the bank. The big four (CBA, NAB, ANZ, WPC) have stated interest in going cashless, but they will face different challenges. Their retail and small business segments are much larger than Macquarie and still rely heavily on cash as a payment acceptance method. The small business segment spans anywhere between sole traders to stalls at the fruit and veggie market to the coffee shops to the small mum and dad businesses. The merchant fees charged for EFTPOS transactions can add up very quickly. Going cashless has it's benefits, but implementation is not easy when the segment is of considerable size.
